Our aim in the UK
Malawi is one of the least developed countries in Africa. Agriculture accounts for about one-third of GDP and 85% of the population live in rural areas, most of whom eke a living as subsistence farmers.
Illiteracy and high prevalence of HIV/AIDS remain as obstacles to economic growth. Nearly half of all girls receive no primary school education.

Ghana
The Ghanaian economy has grown more than those of many other African countries in recent years. This is partly due to the country’s liberal trade and privatisation policies and its stable government.
But growth is uneven. In the north, particularly the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions, people rely on subsistence farming. Flooding and drought are common and when crops fail people have no alternative source of income. About 80% of the population lives on less than one dollar a day.

In Africa, we fund training that enables individuals to learn a trade and earn a living. In the UK, volunteers refurbish donated tools, giving them new purpose, and we also support national projects and apprenticeships here at home.
