How we’re helping in Sierra Leone
Malawi is one of the least developed countries in Africa. Agriculture accounts for about one-third of GDP and 85% of the population live in rural areas, most of whom eke a living as subsistence farmers.
Illiteracy and high prevalence of HIV/AIDS remain as obstacles to economic growth. Nearly half of all girls receive no primary school education.

Joyce, Georgina and Margaret were all farming in Lozi, Malawi when they joined a Tools for Self Reliance training programme in partnership with the Foundation for Community and Capacity Development. They all chose to learn tailoring as they thought it was something they could earn a living from – and they wanted to be independent and have a skill they could be proud of.

Stay connected with us
In Africa, we fund training that enables individuals to learn a trade and earn a living. In the UK, volunteers refurbish donated tools, giving them new purpose, and we also support national projects and apprenticeships here at home.
