How we’re helping in Zambia

Malawi is one of the least developed countries in Africa. Agriculture accounts for about one-third of GDP and 85% of the population live in rural areas, most of whom eke a living as subsistence farmers.

Illiteracy and high prevalence of HIV/AIDS remain as obstacles to economic growth. Nearly half of all girls receive no primary school education.

Matuvu is 25 and single with no children. He was working on his family farm with no income when he joined a Tools for Self Reliance and YOHAD training course to improve his prospects and earning potential. He chose carpentry, and learnt to make office desks, doors, coffee tables, cutting and planing, and how to use tools. Matuvu struggled at first to use the tools, but found learning in a group helped.

Stay connected with us

In Africa, we fund training that enables individuals to learn a trade and earn a living. In the UK, volunteers refurbish donated tools, giving them new purpose, and we also support national projects and apprenticeships here at home.
